Digital clutter is something that affects us all, we all have computers, smartphones, tablets and sometimes we have more than one of each. Decluttering, I believe, is a form of cleansing and healing, you let go of things that don't have a purpose or place in your life anymore and people focus so much on physical clutter that it's very easy to forget that clutter also accumulates on our devices.
I want to start my decluttering series by tackling our digital clutter, down below you will find a detailed list on how to proceed. 1. Cleaning your computer on the outside: This can be the first step or the last depending on your preferences but seeing a clean computer will make you feel better. I must admit they can easily get quite grubby, so wipe your screens and keyboards, and make them feel like a brand-new computer. 2. Clean out your email: I try to have an empty inbox, anything I don't need I delete and if I want to keep something I put it in an appropriate folder. I only leave something in my inbox if I'm working on it or I need to reference it. 3. Clear out Desktop: A cluttered desktop makes finding anything impossible, put everything you don't need into its corresponding folder. Bonus: you can now see your background! So, choose a pretty or motivating one.
4. Clear out/organize your downloads folder:
The download folder tends to be the place where things go to be forgotten, go through it and delete anything you don’t need. 5. Organize your documents and picture folders: Same as before, go through it and delete anything you no longer need or want. Create a folder system that will make it easy to find what you’re looking for. 6. Uninstall programs you don't use: This one is self-explanatory, uninstall any program you don't need or use and while you’re at it, see if any program you do use needs any updates. 7. Clear out your reclining bin: This makes sure all the files you just deleted are out of your computer leaving more space on it. 8. Clear internet cache. 9. Go through internet bookmarks: It's totally normal to save things to read/check out later but let’s be honest, most of the time we forget we even saved them, now is your chance to check out what's there, remove anything you don’t want and organize what you do. 10. Run an antivirus scan: Let's make sure everything is O.K. 11. Back up your files: Back up any important files so if anything happens to your computer, you'll at least have the peace of mind of knowing that everything you wanted was saved. 12. Unfollow people on social media: This works for Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Tumblr, Pinterest, etc... Don't feel guilty for going on an unfollowing spree, when you check them out you want to see people that inspire you, make you feel good and people you actually want to keep in touch with, it’s not worth having people that make you feel bad about your life. 13. Delete apps on mobile or tablet: This makes space for new things and makes it easier to find what you need, and it will probably work better too now that it has more space. I think I have thought of everything, if not feel free to recommend a new step in the comments. I am thinking of making a series for different rooms in a house. If you want anything specific please contact me, I'm always open to new ideas. Thank you lovelies, hope to see you in the next post! Paula.
